Worker gets hand caught in machinery An unfortunate and untimely accident fell upon a worker of La Popular Tortilla Factory, located on Angel Coral Street, on Tuesday, August 31, at about 1:00 p.m., as 16-year-old Emmanuel Marcos Garcia got his hand caught in one of the tortilla-making machines.
Reports come into our office on Monday, August 30, that a resort maintenance worker drowned in an incident that took place at a pier of a resort about four miles in North Ambergris Caye after a night of partying.
Joins Oceana at Mississippi Gulf Coast The Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage has found an important political ally in San Pedro’s Mayor Elsa Paz. Paz was aboard the vessel chartered by OCEANA to tour the areas affected by BP’s Deep Horizon spill and was joined by Hollywood celebrities on the gulf tour. At a brief press conference in the U.S., Paz was introduced by Ted Danson, actor and OCEANA Board member.
But Not All Children are as Privileged It’s Back to School time! Summer vacations are over and most children are either moving up another grade in school or just starting of their educational career for the first time whether they are freshmen in high school or first years in the primary schools. Whichever the case may be, classes have commenced and here in San Pedro we are faced with a few minor problems which include (i) no space available at schools for children (ii) children not enrolled at schools and lastly (iii) the need of more classrooms/schools.
Sixteen cancer patient children from all over Belize were on the island on Saturday, August 28, 2010, to enjoy some sun, sea and sand. Mr. Steve Hagan, in collaboration with Belize Kids Incorporated, was responsible for creating such a great outing for the children to enjoy and take their minds away from the everyday hardships of dealing with cancer.
San Pedro, Ambergris Caye was represented at the Expo Weekend Tour in El Salvador. The San Pedro Town Council participated at the event thanks to the invitation of Her Excellency Celie Paz de Gonzalez, Belize’s Ambassador to El Salavador.
Although a very weak tropical wave decided to threaten the festival with some rain, the San Pedro International Costa Maya Festival, Version 19, went through without a hitch this past weekend – no rain, no delays, just pure fun and entertainment for all.
Guatemala now has a “1-Up” on Mexico after Gabriela Asturias, Miss Guatemala, won the 15th edition of the beauty contest Reina de la Costa Maya held on Thursday, August 5, breaking the 4-4 tie both countries had on pageant wins! Pageant night was the biggest draw of all the festival nights this year as it has proven to become a powerhouse pageant with eight beautiful contestants from around the region, packing excellent entertainment and wonderful surprises. The event was broadcasted live on Belize City’s Channel 5 and is available online.
In last week’s edition of Ambergris Today we introduced to you the six beautiful young ladies that will be vying for the title of Miss San Pedro on Saturday, September 4, 2010. The six attractive San pedranas who will be on center stage at this year’s pageant are Genny Rhaburn, Lila Gonzalez, Ivy Alamilla, Mishelby Leiva, Gelie Nuñez and Natasha Stewart. This past weekend the girls travelled to Chetumal, Quintana Roo where they went shopping and visited several important places. They also have many lunches, dinner and other places to visit prior to pageant.

Her name is Marije aka Cat from the Netherlands and she is traveling around the world taking with her a red carpet and in each country she visits she films video of her ‘Cat Walk’ and challenges. Marije is doing Cat Walks in at least 20 countries and at the end of her journey she will take all her Cat Walk film footage and turn it into a longer video. Her mission is to make people aware of the enormous strength of body language to themselves and others and to inspire all human beings to follow their heart and use all the opportunities in the world to make dreams come true!
The first annual Costa Maya Triathlon was held on Sunday, August 8, and by the turnout of participants and spectators it surely seems that it won’t be the last. Six teams and ten individual participants lined up on the beach front at the race’s start by Wayo’s beach where swimmers completed a quarter mile course.
A newborn always brings joy, happiness and love to parents, family and friends. Ambergris Today Newspaper has shared many great moments with different families such as the first baby born for the New Year, San Pedro’s first and only set of triplets, and even a baby delivered at home by his dad. - Press Release, Belmopan, August 2, 2010- Belize and Mexico held a technical meeting on Dengue on July 30, as part of the Belize-Mexico Border Health Commission. The aim of the meeting was to coordinate strategies and exchange information in order to prevent and fight dengue. The meeting was held at the Corozal Free Zone administration building and was attended by government officials of the Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Health and the Quintana Roo. Department of Health, as well as the Belize’s Ministry of Health (MOH).
The eight beauty ambassadors for the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant have arrived in San Pedro, signaling the commencement of the Costa Maya Festival 2010. Upon their arrival the contestants were whisked away for some sun, sand and sea adventures during the weekend before their heavy scheduling of pageant rehearsals commenced.
The Great Blue Hole is a famous diving spot off the coast of Belize City where many tourists and locals have made many dives to explore the stalactite formations and swim among large groupers, nurse sharks and a vast array of species of fish. But this week the atoll reef area was the scene of an unfortunate incident as a snorkel guide unfortunately passed away.
The San Pedro Summer Camp came to an end last week after a full month of great activities for the participating children. Summer Camp on steroids, we call it, as the program was chock-full of activities that ranged from regular activities like swimming, fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and picnics to the extreme like cave tubing, archery, parasailing and scuba diving!

These lovely contestants have begun training and had their official photo shoot this past weekend at one of San Pedro’s top resorts – Victoria House and photos were taken by Maya and Colette of Conch Creative.
Making headline news all over the internet is Billionaire Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Greene for leaving unpaid fines of $1.87 million to Belize after his yacht, Summerwind, tore up the coral reef. Making the news more recently were the Westerhaven, the Great Escape and the Azteca were three notable vessels that ran aground on Belize’s Barrier Beef. Five years ago, Summerwind, also damaged the reef but its owner is now claiming that his vessel never ran aground on Belize’s reef, despite irrefutable evidence.
