Sargassum Products for Climate Resilience to mitigate harsh impacts on Caribbean States - The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and Plant & Food Research, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute, will host a virtual training workshop on Wednesday, 3 March 2021. The session—which will be conducted with the assistance of Prof Mona Webber of the Marine Science Centre, UWI, Mona Campus, Jamaica—will focus on techniques for harvesting, handling, species identification and processing of Sargassum seaweed for initial evaluation.

- Press Release - The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has been working assiduously to protect and preserve the health of the Belizean population. It is in that regard that the Ministry informs the public that it has received 15 of the nasopharyngeal swabs that were sent to Baylor College in Houston for gene sequencing. All 15 samples initially submitted were processed and sequenced, however, not all resulted in good sequence data. One of these samples was classified as the U.K. Variant also known as the B.1.1.7 lineage or strain 20I/501Y.V1

The Ministry of Health and Wellness today announced that Belize received a donation of 1,000 Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the Government and people of Barbados that arrived in country by cargo flight early this morning, Wednesday, February 24, 2021.
Minister of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation and Area Representative for Belize Rural South, Andre Perez, held a press conference on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, to share the preliminary finding of the Audit Report commissioned by the Minister on the financial state of affairs at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Based on the preliminary audit report up to 2020 alone, the key areas of potential loss and cash flows mismanagement amount to a grand total of $1,747,455 in potential loss and an estimated $4Mil in potential mismanagement of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation is pleased to announce its achievements since November 2020. The Ministry has successfully commenced the establishment of a Policy and Planning Unit to guide the process of developing the Ministry’s five-year strategic plan. The Office of the Prime Minister has announced the appointment of Dr. Griovanni Solorzano as the new Chairperson of the National AIDS Commission (NAC)/Country Coordinator Mechanism (CCM). Dr. Solorzano’s appointment came into effect on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. He replaces previous Chairperson, Mrs. Laura Tucker-Longsworth.
Belize is slated to begin receiving COVID-19 vaccines as early as the end of February, along with Caribbean countries. Through the diligent work of COVAX and the World Health Organization, Belize has officially guaranteed vaccinations for approximately 30% of its population, starting with Front Line Workers that includes all resort and hotel staff.
A toy pirate ship, named Adventure, launched by two young brothers, Ollie (11) and Harry(8) Ferguson, from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, had previously sailed the high seas to Scandinavia and onwards to Barbados before being lost at sea. A new toy ship was then launched off the coast of Guyana to continue the transatlantic adventure. Today, Wednesday, January 27, 2021, it arrived in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
On January 14, 2021, the Ministry of Health and Wellness announced plans to expand testing to include persons requiring negative COVID-19 tests for entry to other countries. To this end, the Ministry has published a list of approved COVID-19 testing sites. Additional testing sites will be added to the above-mentioned lists over the next six weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on January 12, 2021 that it will require a negative COVID-19 test from all passengers arriving in the United States, as of January 26, 2021. Posed to have severe impacts on Belize’s tourism sector, The Ministry of Health and Wellness has announced that it will expand testing to now include all persons requiring a negative COVID-19 test to enter other countries.

On January 15, 2021, 34 employees reported for an orientation where they began their journey at the call center that is looking forward to hiring additional workers over the following months, creating a total of 200 jobs on the island.

The new Miss Universe Belize 2020/2021 is 24 year old Iris Salguero from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. Iris Salguero grew up in Ambergris Caye in Belize. As one of twelve siblings, Iris learned the importance of being patient and how to be a team player at a very young age. In High School, she had to finance her own education and was proud to graduate as Salutatorian.
Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Hon. Kareem Musa has posted a list of Belize’s Public and Bank Holidays for 2021 that include a new Holiday on January 15 (George Price Day) and August 1 (Freedom Day). Pan American Day (October 12) has been removed from the list of holidays.
The Office of the Prime Minister announces the death of Dame Elmira Minita Gordon, GCMG, GCVO. She died yesterday, January 1, 2021, in Inglewood, California. Dame Minita Gordon served as Belize’s first Governor General from 1981 to 1993, the first woman in the Commonwealth to assume the role. The Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño and the Government of Belize express condolences to the family and friends of Dame Minita Gordon. Details of her burial will be shared at a later date.
