Belizeans have another reason to go on a shopping frenzy in Chetumal, especially this Christmas season, as one of the world's largest public companies, Walmart - with 8,500 stores in 15 countries, with 55 different names opened its doors for business in Chetumal, Q. Roo, Mexico.

“From today and onwards we are going to be open 365 days a year,” stated Luis Doncel, Business Manager of Walmart to 7 News. “I think it was a big expectation because it's the first Walmart in Chetumal and at the same time we think it's going to be the only Wal Mart in Chetumal in the coming years. According to the population, the market will be closed in the next 5-7 years for a new mall to open, so we consider it was a great deal to install in here."

Even though Walmart is the main store at the Plaza Bahia commercial center, there are 39 other commercial premises own by different businesses including coffee shops, photo studios, banks and food courts, to name a few. Walmart is located on Avenida Insurgentes, up the boulevard from the Mall Plaza de las Americas and opens everyday from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

The company, Walmart, operates under its own name in the United States, including the 50 states. Walmart operates over 1,410 retail outlets in Mexico including restaurants and supermarkets, under the names Walmart, Superama, Suburbia, VIPS, Sam's Club and Bodega Aurrerá. The company is now Mexico's largest private sector employer. It competes fiercely with Soriana, Comercial Mexicana, Chedraui, H-E-B, Casa Ley, and S-Mart.

In Avenida Heroes, you can find a lot of family owned or local shops where you can get nick and snacks, clothes, and other fun stuff. I lived in Chetumal for 2 years and went to visit since I was a toddler, now I know for a fact that this establishment will make those stores hurt. The only thing I can think of a big chain business do in any place is create work for people. I applaud that. I can go on and on. But, I understand any place that is small, tends to grow. It is just the way it is. I will still enjoy going to Chetumal and visiting the small shops and I hope and pray it does not disappear because of WALLY MART!

The previous post kind of reminds me of the take over of the "Arab" owned stores in San Pedro.  It started in the 1990's when the first hardware store opened.  These arabs knew zero english, we not even residents but  the first store to open was obtained under the name of an Arab's wife (Lilette "a belizean") who applied on his behalf.  With that the flood gates opened to the numerous Hardware Stores, Supermarkets and so many other business.  And most of them employ thier own Arab family and very few Belizeans.  Since then how many small supermarkets have gone under?  Way Too many small family owned business contintue to go under cause they cannot compete.  These Arabs have the blessing of the Area Rep and the Mayor.  So are the small stationary shops with other giant stores establishing themselves in San Pedro like the one Pescador Drive close to the primary school.  It is a shame that the leaders that we elect to "PROTECT US" end up hurting us and all because of campaign contributions that end up in thier pockets.  I hope i never see a wall mart in my hometown.

Buay.....let me be blunt...to the point..since you seem not to be able to take a hint.  I was comparing what one of the persons who previously posted was saying to San Pedro.  Avenida Heroes in Chetumal has many small family owned stores that sell the same products wall mart will sell so those business stand to suffer or even close down...the same thing is happening in San Pedro with all of the Harmouche's (Arab's) who have taken over with the many hardware and supermarket stores...Now if you can't understand that..then god help you...

Walmart is my favorite Store, and will definitely go there before Christmas for quality and good deals.  That is not to say that the San Pedro stores like A&R and Caye supplies are not good enough, but Walmart is larger and  more variety and all the goodies under one roof, including food.

The fact that it is in CLOSE PROXIMITY is of great benefit for persons with needs that are provided by WallMart. The range of goods is wider than any outlet in Belize and it's easy and safe to access.
