Silvia Patricia Lopez, affectionately known as “La Patty Yeh-Yeh”, was crowned Reina del Carnaval (Mrs. Carnaval) 2015 at the second annual pageant that kick started the Carnaval celebrations in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize on Saturday, February 7, at the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium.
A jam-packed venue of elated spectators witnessed all the song, dance and humor that the pageant organizers and contestants put together for the second annual Reina del Carnaval Pageant. The pageant, dedicated to the traditional slapstick-style celebrations of Carnaval on the island, was contested by women 40 years and older. Needless to say, it was a very entertaining event with five contestants competing for the title of Mrs. Carnaval; the contestants were 51-year-old Silvia Patricia Lopez, 48-year-old Neri Itzab, 42-year-old Sinia Cruz, 49-year-old Rose Marie Linarez and 44-year-old Zeida Alamilla.
Each contestant graced the stage during four segments of the pageant which included an intro dance, cultural costume dance, talent and evening gown segments. Apart from being humorous during their talent presentations, the ladies presented themselves with grace and elegance during the introduction dance in which they were joined by outgoing Reina del Carnaval Mrs. Leonor Rosado and evening gown competition of the event. During their cultural presentation, each contestant performed a comparsa-style (street dancing) dance depicting the traditional Carnaval dances of the town.
After all the fun segments and performances by the San Pedro Dance Academy, the San Pedro Jabawakis and serenade by don Oscar Aquilar, it was announced that Sinia Cruz was selected as First Runner up and Silvia Patricia Lopez as the new Mrs. Reina del Carnaval.
The Mrs. Carnaval Pageant kicked off the San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Carnaval celebrations which will run from February, 13 to February 18, 2015. The Mrs. Reina del Carnaval Pageant is organized by Mrs. Flora Ancona’s Comparsa Group that year after year entertains during the three days of street dancing of Carnaval. The pageant contestants are older women (Mrs.) who prove that beauty comes in all ages.
