Oceana came to Belize 10 years ago determined to support Belizeans in their advocacy for the national policies necessary to enhance and increase our collective protection of the Caribbean Sea.
Since then Oceana has helped Belize make significant strides in ocean conservation, accomplishing two momentous laws to safeguard its marine resources. Belize’s commitment to ocean stewardship was solidified with a ban on all forms of trawling and also the indefinite moratorium on offshore oil activities.
Oceana is currently working to protect fishing-based livelihoods by supporting a 20-year call by local fishers to ban the use of gillnets.
Throughout its tenure in Belize, the Oceana team has been supported by numerous sensational allies and partners, individuals, wavemakers and of course - the policy makers willing to champion change.
As we look to the future, Oceana is proud to be on the cutting edge of initiatives and ideas that will employ innovation and technology to empower all Belizeans to play a meaningful role in the management of our fisheries resources.
